After another scorching summer, we just had the wettest months the island has seen in a long looong time. The overwhelming amount of rain completely soaked the soil. Everywhere on the island rivers and waterfalls formed. Also on our farm we had water flowing everywhere.
We lost count, but it seems like at least 10 storms have hit the islands. At the height of storms many roads on the island where blocked. Near our farm the public road collapsed and an other got blocked by falling rocks and trees. Leaving us locked in at the farm for a couple of days.

At the same time our cave house started leaking, a terrace wall collapsed, the weeds exploded and our water reservoirs filled up. Of the whole island, our area, Barranco Hondo in Juncalillo received by far the most rain. In November, December, January, February and March a total of 1.206 liters of water per square meter. This is 115% more rain than we received on average in 2023 and 2024.

Rain is not all bad off course. Maybe you remember the picture below of Winfred standing in our empty underground reservoir during the summer. This reservoir is now completely filled. In all our reservoirs we accumulated at least 834.000 liters of water. That should easily get us through next summer.

The reservoir filled up completely
The graph below show how extreme the rainfall is compared to the previous year. In 2025 we had 58% more rain than in an average year. And until 24 March 2026 we already had as much rain as normally in a whole year!

Normally the rain season lasts until April. But when the temperature reached 28 degrees Celsius a few weeks ago, we thought the summer arrived early. But for now winter has returned with temperatures of 8 degrees and rain. We wil keep you updated on how the weather develops!

This is Presa de Los Perez that is located below our farm. This reservoir was built in 1955 and on Sunday 22 March 2026 it filled up completely for the third time in its history. Its surplus of water is now flowing down the mountain to replenish the lower reservoirs.
All over the islands reservoirs are overflowing like this and are causing floods in the lower parts of the island.
